Belem, Brazil
Belém is the gateway to the Amazon where nature integrates with urban life. Its streets and parks shaded by mango trees, its Belle Epoque buildings, its traditional cuisine and its cultural mix make this stopover one of the most authentic in Brazil.
Capital of Para, the city of Belém is full of unmissable sites. In the center, you can visit the colorful Ver-O-Peso market, a symbol representative of the traditions and culture of the people of Para. It is here that the most varied river fish, countless medicinal plants, ornamental plants, handicraft products and all species of edible fruits from the Amazon (more than 180) are sold. Not far away, the “Estação das Docas” is a beautiful warehouse restoration project on the banks of the Guajara River. Currently it houses restaurants, bars, cinemas and an exhibition on the history of Belém.
In the old town, you can visit the Fort do “Presépio” built in 1616, the “Casa das 11 Janelas” and the Para State Museum.
To the east of the center you will find the Emilio Goeldi Museum and the Basilica of Nazaré. The museum, founded in 1866, is one of the most important research institutions in the Amazon. Both a botanical and zoological garden, it is a living picture of the fauna (anacondas, jacaré açu, otters, etc.) and flora (vitoria regia, mangrove trees, etc.) of the region. The Basilica of Nazaré was built in 1852 where an image of the Saint was found. It is the only Basilica in the entire Amazon region. A public holiday is dedicated to the worship of the Saint: the “Cirio de Nazaré” procession always takes place on the second Sunday of the month of October.
